Michael Moore: US faces tyranny, but not through gun control

Filmmaker Michael Moore no stranger to controversy waded in to the discussion and offered DePape a...
Michael Moore has not been shy about his anti-gun stance; but he does believe America is headed down the path to tyranny.
In a February interview with We Are Change's Sierra Adamson, popular filmmaker and activist Michael Moore was questioned on his beliefs regarding the rise of tyranny in America. When asked if he thought the United States was facing a tyrannical government, Moore responded with the following statement: "What we're seeing are the early baby-steps that all tyrannical governments and institutions have faced at the very beginning." He went on to say that tyranny starts out not looking like tyranny and the tyrannical laws that are passed seem to have reason.
Adamson proceeded to question Moore about the correlation between gun control proposals and the rise of tyranny. Moore replied that he does not see the correlation because he "think(s) that gun control is a good idea." He also explained that he believes anyone who uses a gun, just like with a car, should have to be registered and should have to prove that they know how to use it.
Moore was also confronted by We Are Change on an old report about one of his security guards being caught with a gun, despite his stance on guns. He said the bodyguard was actually working for Arnold Schwarzenegger and he doesn't know how the report surfaced the way it did.
Michael Moore has been a very outspoken proponent of gun control, calling for a full ban of semiautomatic weapons. He also made the controversial statement that "Americans own guns because too many white people are afraid of black people."

I'm trying to get this straight. He thinks the government is becoming tyrannical but not because of gun control because he likes that. What an idiot!

@Arthur: Doesn't make a whole lot of sense, dose it?

Well, Alex, I'm sure it does to MM.

Moore has demonstrated that he is an idiot on many occasions.

Look at the "Hollywood Stars" and monied liberals like Albert Bore and Operah Spendfree. They all live in mansions with massive carbon footprints and fly all over the world in over-sized fossil-fuel-guzzling jets burning up natural resources like there is no tomorrow.
Michael Moore is a particularly ugly and decidedly creepy liberal hypocrite with far more money than brains in my opinion.

I stand with MM on this one. The government is becoming tyrannical, and this tyranny will be overcome with information, not guns. Civil liberties are better defended by a hundred hackers than a militia of ten thousand preppers.

While I can agree MM is an idiot I can't call him a complete idiot just by these comments. At least the way I read it, he is a bit oblivious on the idiotic gun grabbing efforts but he is speaking of the tyranny that is becoming more and more clear through other means where the government is slipping it's tentacles into every single facet of our lives from conception to death. MM almost had a completely rational thought for once, so we gotta give him a little credit.

Richard, I couldn't agree more. MM seems to understand where we're headed; he just can't grasp the fact that tyranny does not arise from a violation of one's vision or idea of what works in society, but from a violation of a basic set of freedoms and liberties, which does include the right to own guns.

From the outside of your country, it looks as if your country has taken its first, small steps towards a fascist society. The rich and the corporations control your politics. The prospect of 30 000 spy drones watching US citizens smacks of tyranny to me. Democracy is a rare and fragile form and constant attention must be paid to keep it strong.

from Canada the USA looks like a Police State already...and gun control is not the problem or the cause of it....the NDAA is a big contributor to the Police State. locking up whistleblowers instead of acting on their information is Police State tactics...paramilitarising the Police forces, and allowing the Military to kill American citizens, due process free, or indefinitely incarcerate them in hidden prisons without recourse to a lawyer, or to a reasonable trial, is a Police State tactic....killing "Habeas Corpus" merely over "suspicion" of some kind of relationship with terrorists or their causes is a Police State tactic...the Patriot Act is a serious Police State tactic....the Department of "Homeland" Security is a Police State organisation, rather like the "Schutzstaffel" or Gestapo....even in using that term, "homeland" ("Heimat" in German)...using the concept of patriotism to instill a Fascist Police State is definitely a Police State tactic....
oh yes, Americka has started on the road to a Fascist Totalitarian dictatorship ...a LONG time back already, when the Republickan party went "rogue" and left its roots as a reasonable, moderately conservative party....the main difference from the old fashioned Fascist Tyrannies, is that the putative "leader" may change with "elections" so that the people THINK that they have some influence on politics and their own lives, BUT in reality the Corporatocratic Oligarchs run the country....the David H. Kochs of the country....are the real rulers....
Michael Moore is absolutely correct....tyranny has slipped into Americka when everyone was looking at Kim Kardashian, and Survivor...and whatever...
gun control is not the problem though....that's only a symptom....
his statement: ""Americans own guns because too many white people are afraid of black people.", made me think a lot...and i suspect he's right about that too...

There are many signs America is being transformed into a corporate-fascist style police state, including agenda to ultimately disarm law-abiding citizens in order to have a defenseless population against government tyranny.

Becoming? The American public is disenfranchised, the economics are insane, and the democracy doesn't work. What else do you need?

Who are you to talk? Canada is just an American suburb.
#14Mar 4, 2013 Barbara McPherson
Canada and Canadians have to walk a narrow path living next to the most powerful nation in the world today, but it is inaccurate to dismiss us as a suburb of your nation. The USA has much to offer the world and we would be silly to ignore that but just as silly to ignore the huge military machine your country also wields. Absolutely we have problems here and it is important to engage actively in politics while we can still make a difference.

Perhaps Canadians need to get off the "narrow path" and take more responsibility for governing themselves. I notice wide-ranging criticism of the U.S. doesn't bother you in the least, but one calls Canada an American suburb and you're suddenly talking about narrow paths.

Take note, If America goes totalitarian, It will without missing a beat, try to subjugate the rest of the world underneath its authority. They only difference is that they will just be a little more likely to use force rather than money in their conquest. After all it will be a little more difficult to deceive the world on your true intentions once you have already exposed your true colors. Nothing like another pointless endeavor into ruin and rebellion to keep up with our species historical record.

thanks Larry...really i have to admit you're mostly right, what with the Fascist Harperite Government that is founded on Republickan principles...namely "me first" and "my rich friends above all, except me!"....we unfortunately, at least in terms of our Federal government, become a suburb of the US....however that doesn't mean that i'm a willing member of the Fascist Police State takeover....i criticise it just as much here as i criticise the Americkan version...as you can tell if you look at stories about Canada that i've commented on...
i'm all in favour of Canada governing itself, but when Americka and China own it almost lock stock and barrel, it's pointless to bray about "self-determination", especially, when the Americkan Police State is spreading its nasty tentacles north of the border into our country.
gee, Larry, you come off as pretty "anti-Canadian"....and you complain about what an "anti-Americkan" i am.....whereas i have a very GOOD reason for my criticisms of your governing administration, you on the other hand, really have nothing to complain about when it comes to Canada, other than a few loudmouth Canucks complaining about Americkan Police State tactics. by the way, i am NOT criticising the US per se, but rather the GOVERNMENT of the US, which is Corrupt, and Fascist, as many of your own citizens have pointed out many a time...
perhaps it's time to get off your "rah rah Americka" pedestal and actually look at what your government is doing in its Police State tactics....
Jimmy, you're right about "If America goes totalitarian, It will without missing a beat, try to subjugate the rest of the world underneath its authority."
already they've been doing this for years, Jimmy....didn't you notice? using BOTH big Money, and the iron fist of the Pentagon to back up the big Money...this has been happening for a very long time, since at least the end of WWII, when Americka was poised pugnaciously against the dreaded Commies....the USSR, and the PRC....and then the North Koreans, the North Vietnamese and so on...
they CLAIMED they were "fighting to defend democracy, and "our way" of life" but really what they meant was that they were fighting to expand their military and industrial hegemony all over the world....fighting to steal countries' natural resources to make fortunes on....fighting to keep people in sweatshop conditions working for Americkan capitalists...fighting AGAINST democracy whenever it raised its "ugly head"... Actually the Americkan Military Industrial Complex has always preferred to do business with fellow Totalitarian governments... democracies get in the way of business....

thanks for the comment Michael...i do try to hit that nail whenever possible...

Wow, Michael Moore is a loon. One question for him, what about the Black people who own guns, are they afraid of the white people?
He's concerned about tyranny, but doesn't want people to be able to do anything about it...
I'm wondering what his alternate reality is really like.
